چکیده

Many large polyatomic molecules attach free low-energy electrons to form parent negative ions that subsequently decay by autodetachment, reverting to a neutral molecule and a free electron. Their lifetimes against autodetachment, however, span a broad range. This is consistent with a simple model in which it is assumed that electron capture initially forms an excited intermediate in which only a limited number of the possible vibrational modes interact directly with the captured electron and are initially excited. These ‘‘active’’ modes may then be deexcited by direct autodetachment or by intramolecular vibrational relaxation ~IVR! which transfers the excess energy ~associated primarily with the electron affinity of the target molecule and the kinetic energy of the captured electron! to other ‘‘inactive’’ modes where the energy is no longer available for autodetachment. Once IVR has occurred, the probability that the energy will be reconcentrated in an active mode from which autodetachment can occur is small, leading to the formation of longlived parent anions. The fate of the intermediate negative ion is thus governed by the competition between direct autodetachment and IVR. If the time scale for IVR is long compared to that for direct autodetachment, the intermediate will decay by direct autodetachment, typically within a few picoseconds of its formation. If the reverse is true, the intermediate will be ‘‘stabilized’’ by IVR, leading to the creation of metastable long-lived parent anions with lifetimes measured in microseconds or milliseconds. Earlier work has demonstrated that the competition between IVR and direct autodetachment, and the relative rates associated with these processes, can be investigated using atoms in high Rydberg states through studies of the lifetimes of negative ions created in electron-transfer reactions of the type

Measurement of the electron attachment rates for SF6 and C7F14 at T(e) = 0.2 eV in a magnetized Q machine plasma.

Electron attachment rates for SF(6) and C(7)F(14) were measured in a magnetized Q machine plasma at an electron temperature of 0.2+/-0.02 eV and with neutral gas pressures of P approximately 10(-4) Torr. The rate constants for attachment to SF(6) and C(7)F(14) were (7.6+/-2.0)x10(-8) and (2.2+/-0.9)x10(-7) cm(3) s(-1), respectively.

Nondissociative low energy electron attachment to C2Cl4 :C2Cl4

The lifetimes of long-lived parent anions formed by nondissociative electron attachment to C2Cl4 are investigated using Rydberg atom techniques. The ions are created through electron transfer in collisions with K(np) Rydberg atoms and their lifetimes are measured using both time-of-flight techniques and a permanent magnet Penning trap designed specifically for heavy ion storage. The data show t...

Dissociative electron attachment to unstable molecules and slow fragmentation of metastable molecular anions

Recent experimental investigations of dissociative electron attachment to unstable molecules and free radicals are reviewed along with observations of metastable negatively charged ions. Measurements have been made with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer in Belfast and also, for metastable ions, with a double focussing twin field mass spectrometer in Innsbruck. Electron attachment to unstable C...

Fragmentation of metastable SF(6)(-*) ions with microsecond lifetimes in competition with autodetachment.

Fragmentation of metastable SF(6)(-*) ions formed in low energy electron attachment to SF(6) has been investigated. The dissociation reaction SF(6)(-*)-->SF(5) (-)+F has been observed approximately 1.5-3.4 micros and approximately 17-32 micros after electron attachment in a time-of-flight and a double focusing two sector field mass spectrometer, respectively. Metastable dissociation is observed...

Electron attachment to SF 6 under well defined conditions : Comparison of statistical modeling results

Experiments were carried out using a flowing-afterglow Langmuir-probe apparatus to measure rate constants for electron attachment to SF6 and thermal detachment from SF6'. In a recent series of papers, these results were combined with new and existing data on nondissociative and dissociative attachment to SF6 and compared to statistical modeling of the various processes involved in the stabiliza...
